eCommerce Success Story: Oddballs

11/06/2024
  • Come and discover the eCommerce success story of Oddballs, a unique, ethical, and charitable underwear brand.

  • When we think of underwear, we generally imagine a product that is functional or sexy. Therefore, having fun underwear is already an attribute that can surprise us. Moreover, Oddballs' underwear has a strong ethical stance in raising awareness about diseases such as testicular cancer.

The result is a remarkable company with overwhelming success in the UK through its online store.

    Let's find out more.
  • The Origin of Oddballs

  • It may seem like a cliché when talking about an English eCommerce, but the founders of the brand assure that the idea arose on a cold January afternoon in 2014 while having a few pints in a pub.

The original idea was to sell underwear to raise funds against testicular cancer and to raise awareness about a disease that is curable in over 95% of cases with early detection.

What could have been just another bar conversation turned into an ambitious project. By May of that year, they had already produced their first stock of garments, and in May, they managed to close the first order.
  • INSIGHT: If you have an idea, execute it quickly. As soon as you have a minimum viable product, launch it to the market, because you can always improve it later. Do not fall into analysis paralysis.
  • Oddballs: A Brand True to Its Principles

  • How much are you willing to get involved in a social cause? If, as in this case, it is part of your ethos, you have to do it consistently and determinedly.

Since its founding in 2014, this company has donated nearly a million pounds to charitable causes, but it also plays an active role in raising awareness

Thanks to an ambassador program, it organizes talks at universities and other public forums, helping with cancer detection. In addition to all this, it has created a guide distributed in locker rooms of pools and gyms across the country.
  • INSIGHT: You might remember an article about the brand Minimalism, published on this blog. One of the founders said: if your principles do not cost you money, they arre just opinions. Oddballs has internalized this idea exactly the same way.
  • The Product

  • As we have already mentioned, they initially sold underwear, a product closely linked to the cause that inspired them.

Over the years, Oddballs’ catalog has grown. Now, besides all kinds of boxers and briefs, you can find socks, t-shirts, pajamas, sportswear, sunglasses, umbrellas...

And since charitable causes are transversal, they also sell these products in their female versions.
  • INSIGHT: If you have a niche product, there comes a time when the best way to grow is to expand the catalog. The important thing is to be able to do it in a coherently so that aligns with your target group.
  • Another important aspect for the brand is the design of its products. You may like them more, or you may like them less, but I assure you they won’t leave you indifferent.

Generally, they use vibrant colors and bold patterns. It is understood that this decision is due to more than just the aesthetic taste of the designers, but actually seeks to contribute to conveying a positive, hopeful, and fun message. Given the charitable nature of the project, the message is balanced with the design.

In these ten years, Oddballs has launched more than 300 different designs. Some are reissued, and others simply have a shorter life cycle. This leads many of their users to collect garments, promoting loyalty and subscription sales.

To close the design topic, it is worth mentioning that they have different agreements with rugby or football teams, brands of all kinds, and, of course, various charitable organizations. You can find these special designs, created for each collaboration, on their website.
  • INSIGHT: When you sell a product, of any kind, you need to stand out from your competitors. Oddballs has managed to create a concept, a unique style, and a unique way of selling it.
  • Oddballs’ eCommerce

  • At first glance, beyond the colorful design, it does not seem like a very revolutionary online store. However, a bit of in-depth review reveals some elements we can get inspired by.
  • Several elements stand out as we scroll:

    • Notification bell: no one can resist knowing what’s behind it. Although it is about special or themed offers, the great thing is that you don not have to be registered to see them.
    •  Main Slider-Banner: quite standard in design. Promotions, offers, and themed products. Functional.
    •  Best sellers: a horizontal slider with products for men and women
    •  Functionality banner: in this case focused on “perfect pair,” a tool that recommends matching garments for a couple. This is quite original.
    •  Social proof: with images of real users uploaded to Instagram.
    •   Brand and initiative carousel: to generate a sense of authority.
    •    Slider: a more retention and acquisition-oriented banner. In this case, it combines several types of subscriptions and even includes a game.
  • INSIGHT: The Oddballs homepage is very balanced, an example of how to combine different elements with different functions.
  • The categories are also very well designed, in fact, they have usability above average. We can use complex filters (size, style, price...), but with the large and accessible buttons at the top, much of the interaction is solved.

Special mention to the images of people wearing the garments; this avoids the typical grid filled with products on a neutral background. We see a context of use and happy people, making it easier to empathize with the product.
  • INSIGHT: You have probably noticed the type of models they use to showcase the clothes. They are regular people of a wide range of ages, races, and body types. This helps a lot in establishing proximity with their audience, which doesn’t always have gym bodies.
  • Keys to Oddballs’ Success

    • Staying true to their vision: if anything has made them grow, it is the dissemination component and collaboration with social causes. They haven’t only maintained this, they have incorporated new causes.
    • Licenses and collaborations: agreements with important teams like the Irish or English rugby teams give them extra visibility. They have been able to access them partly because of their corporate social responsibility component.
    •  Design rotation: for customers, it is very appealing to see that the brand evolves and presents them with new products frequently.
    •   Subscription model: subscribers, in exchange for a monthly fee of £11, receive a pair of underwear a month, plus socks, gifts, priority sales, free shipping...
    •    A lot of social proof: as mentioned, on their website we can find images of anonymous people and celebrities. Additionally, they place a lot of importance on the reviews they receive on specialized review sites like Trustpilot.
  • What have you learned from Oddballs' eCommerce success story? Will any of these points inspire you? I hope so!
