The best marketing ideas for Singles Day

06/11/2017
  • It’s been some years already since the Singles day began. It’s a day gaining popularity every year to no wonder because this day which takes place a couple of weeks before Black Friday is rapidly becoming the unofficial start of the Christmas sales season.

But, what’s Singles Day? As we told you in this post, Singles Day is a day on which businesses celebrate Valentine’s day for singles, with exclusive deals and discounts for singles only.

You could say that it is the counterpart of  Valentines Day, but at a time of the year that, because of the date, it splices with Black Friday and the rest of the Christmas sale season.

This day was invented by the giant of Asian e-Commerce, Alibaba, and for a few years, it only took place in China. But a couple of years ago, the Western world began to participate in this celebration, and some brands in our country are seeing an exponential increase in sales year after year.

In short, it’s a date you can benefit a lot from if you have an online store. So, if you can’t think of what to do, take note of these marketing ideas we propose for this year’s Singles Day.

  • #1 – “Love yourself” campaign

  • A good idea to focus your Singles Day’s actions is to use the ‘Love yourself’ slogan, i.e. using the self-reward concept. Because being single does not mean that you cannot celebrate as a “couple” with yourself, loving you a little and proving it to yourself with a gift.

How can you turn this campaign idea into a specific action?

    EXAMPLE
: If you have mailing lists segmented by marital status -or have sufficient data to segment them-, you can send an email campaign to your single customers suggesting they choose the best present for themselves on your store with a 10% or 15% discount only during Singles Day.

If your customers are not segmented, you can also try this campaign sending the same ad to all your customers, regardless if they are single or not.

  • #2 – “Single’s” gift guide

  • You know that gift guides are a great tool to give ideas to Christmas buyers. And Singles Day is no exception.

So, create one or more possible gift guides for Singles Day, be sure to include products that can be appreciated or used especially by singles. Afterwards, apply an exclusive discount or deal to that gift guide.

Also, consider that it may be interesting to develop several guides depending on the type of Single you are targeting.

EXAMPLE: One of the most interesting points extracted from the previous Singles Days is that women tend to buy cloth and accessories, while men opt for technology.

Another interesting detail is that, altogether, the vast majority of singles that take advantage of this event to buy themselves a present opt for cloth and accessories -and in this specific category of products women are the majority.

And, finally, do not discard the possibility of creating gift guides for groups of single friends so they can give presents to each other, kinda like the “invisible friend” game but for singles only.

  • # 3 - Events for singles

  • If you can afford it and your business sells a type of product viable for an event for singles, do not hesitate and do it.

That event can be anything from a private sale in your store to a party to celebrate singleness -kinda like a Singles Pride’s Day- or a social event where several singles meet each other with the objective of ?stopping being singles.

Even if you do not have the infrastructure to organize your own event, you can try to sponsor events for singles taking place in your city.

  • # 4 - Celebrate the Singles Month

  • In the same way, as the Black Friday is no longer limited to Friday but has become almost a whole week of sales and deals, and even a whole month in some cases, Singles Day is also expanding to the previous weeks

Thus, in China, the country where this celebration was born, the Singles Day has been replaced by the Singles Month. Throughout the month of October, there are deals and actions that warm up the customers for the great day of Singles Day.

If you want to launch promotions during October but you don’t want to fall into the usual Mid Season Sales, you can launch Singles Day promotions to capture data and your customer’s attention for that day
  • And finally, take note of a very important fact emerging from China.

In Singles Day, most people buy through mobile phones and particularly through the app of each brand.  In 2016, purchases through mobile apps exceeded those made through the desktop version of the online stores.  And, in addition to that, every marketing campaign done through a mobile app had a much more social success than those on other media.

So, if you’re lucky enough have an app, exploit it without hesitation this coming Singles Day.

  • We hope that these marketing ideas for Singles Day have inspired you when deciding which marketing approach, you’ll use this year. Make the most of the Singles Day, and start warming up for Black Friday!
