The challenge of Same day Delivery in eCommerce

05/03/2018
  • Customers want deliveries on the same day, this is so. We tell you how, why and who do so with. Go for same day delivery!

  • Deliveries on the same day in e-commerce have gone from being something revolutionary to another standard in the market. Large marketplaces are reducing their times in logistics and tighten times very much. What does this mean ¿ and, what about those that are not that big? Let's analyze the same day delivery in detail.
  • What are same day deliveries?

  • The definition lies on this question. It is the possibility, offered by some e-commerce, to send and receive orders within 24 hours immediately after being placed

This sounded like science fiction not so long ago, but nowadays happens very often. This delivery time is even shorter when certain players like Amazon or El Corte Inglés which are delivering their orders in 1-2hours.
  • Same day delivery advantages

  • Without they are many. The user is accustomed to the immediacy, he wants to replicate as much as possible the most rewarding part of the offline retail experience: I want it and I have it, but with the advantages and conveniences of the digital purchase.

eCommerce know and they have found some very relevant pros in the delivery on the same day.
  • 1# - A competitive distinguishing advantage

  • The best is that this commercial argument works on two ways. On the one hand, not all eCommerce take this type of shipping, so they are able to steal market share among the most impatient customers.

On the other hand, concerning retail, they are also minimizing one of the most critical points as it is the waiting time. They balance between urgent and easiness.
  • 2# - A business opportunity

  • Certain products and niches lead the urgency. We talked about Amazon before and, there is no doubt that part of the success of its entrance into the fresh market is linked to the same day delivery.

It is simply deal with a particular segment within a broader segmentation. Obviously, there are users who schedule their purchases thoroughly, but a large majority makes orders when they need a replacement urgently. This makes eCommercein a digital version of convenience stores where we went to almost in pyjama.
  • #3 – An affiliation tool

  • Amazon again gives us a hint. When the user must subscribe to a service such as Prime with benefits like it really has (express delivery, free return, buy at a click...) is putting an entrance barrier to other competitors.

As users we do not want to think too much, in fact, the purchase by impulse that comes into play as little as possible the reflexivity are the most interesting.

To eliminate points of friction, we are getting that customer ends up not considering the search for another alternative: I have everything here, I do not have to register, it gives me trust, and also they deliver in less than 24 hours so why am I going to get it more complicated?
  • Disadvantages

  • I will not expand because they are obvious. Delivering on the same day is much more expensive. That is right, to some extent we can pass this extra cost to the buyer and he will be willing to assume certain surcharge for urgency, but the balance is delicate and the shade of the large marketplaces is very elongated.

In addition to the price we cannot forget that this requires a very well-oiled and efficient logistics that it does not turn experience buyer's into chaos (and our workers). Surely this is the clearest barrier to entry for many small shops that are simply unable or unwilling to assume the complexity of shipments on the same day.
  • Can a SME use same day deliveries?

  • On paper there is no apparent impediment. But it is true that to do so we should have very specific characteristics or search for a partner that makes up for the technical problems.

From geographic point of view, we already assume the main determinant. As you will not have a network of logistic bases and endless warehouses, it is logical that you circumscribe this kind of shipments to the proximity area.

The catalogue can also be a problem. If you have a huge stock which is not properly managed you will have many more problems that if you are selling fewer products to deliver on the day.
  • Which company can I hire?

  • This will greatly depend on where and what you want to sell. Restaurants are often supported by large platforms with local distribution networks but who does an eCommerce count with?
  • There are companies like Instapack that offer delivery service in 60 minutes in 28 cities where it deliveries. Its software manages the pickup and delivery in an hour. As a note, I will tell you that along with SEUR that has been shipping in the same day for four years, Instapack is one of the providers of logistics of Amazon Prime.
